Compassion:
As a child care provider for many years, I have witnessed just how important it is for a child to have a family. To be raised in a family environment, the importance of an early education, and how important it is to have the supportive parental figures.
Let me tell you a little bit about Mario. We are not going to use a last name because sadly there's too many Mario's out there. He was separated from his family and placed in the Foster Care system which had his best interests in heart. Unfortunately, he was bounced from one home to another and this constant moving kept him from staying in school and getting an education. His behavior grew worse. Easily irritated and upset with everyone, he would be transferred to different programs with no stability at all. As he got older, the situation didn't change and the possibilities of him finding a home were dwindling.
His possibilities of entering a loving and caring family were minimized and he ended up where no child should be. It was a place that didn't care if he came at night to sleep or not. Nor did they care if he came to eat or not. He needed individual supervision, yet, there was little interest from responsible adults around him. Being left to his own devices, he was lured into a tragic lifestyle that ultimately cost him his life.
This organization was founded in his memory.
When children are little, they have a hard time understanding what is happening, but they are aware when something is not right. They know that, as they get older, it gets harder to adjust to a new way of living. Some kids are sent to good families, with good environments, good guidance, and good structure. Others, like Mario, find it very hard to adjust to new families or new cultures. Changing schools is always hard and jumping from home to home is stressful, especially when there is no guidance.
We live in a society that assumes the child makes the wrong choices, but that is not the case...
They are our victims.
We ignore the needs of young kids and think that they are not our "problem." This is not the case.
There are many programs that are out there designed to help, to catch our children as they fall through the cracks, and navigating that world is very difficult. So we are doing all that we can to make sure our children know that they are cared for. These individuals, that are having a difficult time acclimating to these new environments feel like they don't belong and run away.
We saw this with Mario.
After having run away from another program, tragedy struck. With no personal information on him, no one knew who he was. His biological family, that was unable to provide for him in the first place, suddenly had to come up with the expenses that accompany a death. Being approached by the family, we offered to provide the essentials: a single light blue casket, a floral arrangement, and a small blue blanket that represented some semblance of comfort for Mario.
This is what guides our mission now.
We are dedicated to donating the same three essentials: a casket, flowers, and a blanket, to others that were in similar situations as Mario. We hope that this last act of kindness, can help put these lost souls to rest.
